Climate Change: The Threat to Life and a New Energy Future
The Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) and Cretaquarium have worked in collaboration with the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) in New York to transfer an exhibition for presentation on Crete entitled: ”THE PLANET IS CHANGING. Climate Change: The Threat to Life and a New Energy Future” .

Exhibitions’ Website

The exhibition is divided into 8 areas dealing with the history of energy production from hydrocarbons, the impact on land and marine ecosystems, and ways of achieving a sustainable future as individuals and societies. Particular emphasis is placed on the enormous importance of oceans and seas in determining the global climate. An entire section of the exhibition is devoted to oceans, with state of the art exhibition equipment relaying real-time weather data from NASA to give visitors an up to the minute picture of how the planet is.

In addition to hosting the AMNH exhibits, Cretaquarium has supplemented the exhibition with topic areas on climate change in the Mediterranean and in Greek waters, drawing on a similar museum approach to present data from research work by HMCR and other scientific bodies. The exhibition’s principal objective is to raise visitors’ awareness of the issues and the search for solutions. Small, everyday solutions which, if adopted, can make the difference when it comes to climate change. Visitors are encouraged to make suggestions regarding their own approach to the issue and its solutions.
