Getting to know the underwater world through experiments

An educational programme full of surprises and discoveries!

Following a short introductory presentation of the Aquarium by its staff, pupils walk around the area alone. Half way the walk, in front of a large tank, a presentation with practical experiments and other topics of interest on the Aquarium and its function awaits for them (10:30, duration approx. 30 minutes)

After the pupils have absorbed valuable information and have the answers to their potential questions, they continue their tour at the 2nd half of the Aquarium. At the end of the tour, in the projection hall of the Aquarium, another presentation of different experiments takes place that helps them to further understand the sea environment and the forms of life that accommodates (11:30, duration approx. 40 minutes)

Small and large discoveries for the life at the sea bed.

An educational and experiential tour from which pupils discover an unknown, different world: the world of the sea!  

Pupils learn about the sea bed and species of the life in the sea, they observe the animals and their behaviour and they identify similarities and differences. At the end of the guided tour, the "small explorers” will have learned enough about the wealth and the variety of life in the wondrous underwater world.

After a unique experiential tour and having their awareness about the sea world raised, pupils create their own special sea bed using different materials, such as clay, colours, paper and first and foremost their rich imagination.

How different are our worlds?

The tour " We and the Sea” is an educational as well as an experiential one from which pupils get better acquaint with the sea world and the wealth it hides, so that they finally realize that it is not that different to our world.

Together with pupils, we discover elements of the sea bed and life in the sea that are compared to our world and even to us. In this way, we realize the elements that connect us are more than those that distinguish us.

Discovering different sea ecosystems

The sea bed is literary a world of thousand faces. It is a world that consists of different ecosystems with different forms of life.

During this educational and experiential tour, we focus on the 5 particular ecosystems and the animal species they accommodate.

Guided by the CretAquarium’s education staff, pupils can observe the particular characteristics of the animals so that later they can distinguish by themselves where each one prefers to live.

Unfolding the diversity of the sea world

The experiential tour that focuses on the wealth of the sea world and the diversity of the animals and the organisms that live in it.

This educational program focuses on 6 particular categories of sea organisms. Pupils observe and learn about the particular characteristics of each category, so that at the end they will be able to distinguish and categorize the different species.

Understanding the development of sea organisms.

The sea consists of various ecosystems that accommodate a huge number of species.

During the evolutionary process, different kinds of organisms adapted to cover as much as possible to their needs, while making better use of environmental resources.

During the programme “Ecosystems and Adaptations”, pupils learn in depth the notions of the ecosystem and natural habitat.  In this way, they further understand the development of the marine organisms so that they are in total harmony to their environment.

Comparative Development (Secondary Education Level 1)

Observation of particular systems for various marine organisms

An educational programme that is especially designed in order to support the module of Biology of the 1st Grade of gymnasium. 

It includes observations of food intake systems, substances ‘circulation and respiration in a range of marine organisms, from the simplest ones to the vertebrates, as mentioned in the course curriculum.
